Does anyone here have experience working remotely for a university?
I have been an education coordinator for the last five years, after a first career in teaching. I have usually led or assisted with school improvement projects in the districts where I've worked.
Some need for travel is in my future. I've been spending weekends out-of-state and need to make this "dual residence" more permanent. I'd like (and really need) the freedom to work from anywhere (whether it's city 1, city 2, or somewhere in-between). I have no problems with internet connectivity in the two cities I frequent. I am a self-starter and can keep a schedule, so I do not believe I will run into any problems meeting expectations.
Those of you who work for an online university, do you have any specific guidance or advice?
I've seen postings for Western Governors University and there are a variety of positions such as Program Manager, Course Mentor, and Student Mentor. At first glance these seem to be a good fit, and Glassdoor pegs the salary for all of these as north of $40K with some positions reaching close to $60K salary. I'm aiming for about $55K for my next position, so these seem to be in the ballpark.
I'm hoping I can connect with some folks who work for online universities and can shed more light. Mostly, I am hoping that the technology requirements of the employer would not require me to have a landline, T3 line, physical VOIP phone, or anything that would tie me to a single location for my home office.
One more thought: working for any non-profit or government agency would allow me to have my student loans forgiven within 5 years. I'm open-minded about ideas other than universities for employment, but, staying in the non-profit/government/schooling field for about 5 more years would be perfect for that reason.
