Disclaimer: I created automation software that makes running Facebook Auctions super easy and fast so I have an interest in seeing more Facebook Auctions.
Here is the story of how I learned about Facebook Auctions and how my software came to be.
My wife and a friend were looking for a way to make some money from home because daycare is expensive and it would be nice to not have to leave home, etc. The friend knew about one of those auctions and suggested they try it out.
The model is very easy and cheap, however there is real work involved.
Here is how my wife and friend got started:
- Create a Facebook group. This can be done in a few minutes and is free
- Post a description with the rules, for example see the description of this auction group
- Add everyone on your friends list and ask them to do the same (if they live in your area, unless you are willing to handle shipping items)
- [Optional] hold a contest for a small monetary gift card to get everyone to add more people to the group (getting more people means a better chance at a successful auction - aim for around 2000 members)
- Create a pinned post advertising that your business is open for consignment sales and you are accepting items for auction. Also advertise on the 'for sale' sites in your area
My wife was open for business at that point and people started bringing their stuff to be sold.
For the actual auctions the process was simple although a bit time consuming. They took pictures of all the items (usually a few hundred) and posted them in their auction group in an album. Once the items are posted the work was done until the auction ended when they had to process all of the data and figure out who won what items and how much everyone owed, etc.
This is where the story of Facebook Auctions turns from one of ease to a nightmare of toil and tedium. I would watch as my wife would scroll through Facebook posts over and over again marking things down on paper. If only I could convey the frustration of this process. She was not a happy person doing this auction thing. With the auctions ending at 9pm it would be close to 3 am that my wife would come to bed after sorting. This was supposed to be something easy to do from home that didn't add stress to the house, but on the contrary my wife's stress on sorting day made this seem like the worst thing she could have done to make money at home.
I couldn't stand by and let her go through this without trying to help. I've been a programmer for years so I already knew there was a solution to this problem, but no software (that I know of) exists for Facebook Auctions. I decided to build it and now the data collection portion is automated and streamlined. My software also sorts all items by the buyer so that packing up orders is much easier than scrolling Facebook.
My biggest customer used to spend over 12 hours (800+ items) collecting information from Facebook on paper. It's now about 10 -15 minutes for her.
Again I'm looking to see if there is interest in Facebook Auctions for some entrepreneurial people who don't mind a little physical work.
I will be here to answer any questions. Thanks for taking the time to read my story.
